Our History
The Kimball family has had a long and proud history of practicing law and serving their clients since the 1800s. The family legal tradition started with Matthew’s great-great grand uncle David P. Kimball, a Boston lawyer who graduated from Harvard College in 1856, and entered the legal profession under the auspices of George H. Preston of Boston, and after one year of legal study at his office, he was admitted to the Suffolk Bar. Matthew’s great-grandfather, Henry Horton Kimball, who graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, practiced law in Boston and Melrose beginning in the early 1900’s. In 1940, Matthew’s grandfather, John Hancock Kimball, Sr., who also graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School, began working with his father, Henry Horton Kimball, and then moved his practice from Melrose to 590 Main Street, Lynnfield in 1951. Matthew’s father, John “Jay” Hancock Kimball, Jr., who graduated from Harvard College and Boston University Law School, joined his father in Lynnfield in 1971 and formed Kimball & Kimball. Matthew’s aunt, Marilyn Kimball, who graduated from Radcliffe College and Northeastern Law School, joined Kimball and Kimball in 1984.
Matthew began working for Kimball and Kimball in 2002 while attending the University of New Hampshire. After graduating the University of New Hampshire in 2003, he attended and graduated from New England Law in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2009 and thereafter formed the Law Office of Matthew J. Kimball, P.C in 2009. Since 2009, Matthew has had a professional association with his father’s firm Kimball & Kimball, and they worked closely together on a variety of matters until his father’s retirement in 2024. Matthew’s brother, John “Jason” Hancock Kimball, III, graduated from Merrimack College and Massachusetts School of Law, also had a professional association with both firms until his employment with the Massachusetts Housing Court. Through the years, the Kimball family has demonstrated their commitment to helping others and serving the community. Matthew served as the President of the Lynnfield Rotary Club in 2014-2015, following in the footsteps of his brothers, his father and his grandfather, while also being involved in many other community events and fundraisers. The Kimball Family has also had a strong presence in the Massachusetts Charitable Fire Society, which helps fund discoveries for preventing and extinguishing fires and helps those who have suffered the tragedy of loss caused by fire with monetary assistance.
In 2012, Kimball & Kimball and the Law Office of Matthew J. Kimball, P.C., moved their law practices from the second floor of The Centre at 590 Main Street in Lynnfield, to 618 Main Street, Lynnfield, just two doors from the Centre, at the intersection of Main and Summer Streets, across from the Town Common and Meeting House. In 2022, Matthew moved his practice to 135 Boston Street, Middleton, just a few miles from his previous office in Lynnfield, and continues to practice from that location.
